Choosing the Right Atlanta Workers’ Compensation Attorney

By Darwin F. Johnson on November 3rd, 2014 in Workers Compensation

Going to court after a workplace injury can be intimidating. Although the state of Georgia enforces laws that protect you, the claims process can be difficult and confusing. You have to deal with your previous employer, the insurance providers, medical personnel and the legal system.

Although some workers choose to represent themselves, this is unadvisable and may raise more questions and lead to more problems than solutions. But how do you choose the best attorney to represent you during the claims process?

When choosing the right Atlanta workers’ compensation attorney, consider the following tips to ensure you pick the best representative for your claim.

Ask For a Recommendation

Try contacting a lawyer you’ve worked with in the past on another legal matter, maybe someone you used on your taxes, estate planning or real estate needs. Ask if they could recommend a local workers’ comp attorney who may be able to help you. If they suggest a few names, narrow down the list by doing your own background research and call for a consultation.

Do Independent Research

Before you choose to meet with your representation, do some independent research about the lawyer’s background in Georgia worker’s compensation law as well as biographical information – how long they’ve been practicing, where they went to school and what level of certification they earned. You can start by reading the attorney’s website and go from there.

Prepare for the Consultation

When you first meet for a consultation, you’ll want to have any materials relating to your workers’ comp case at the ready. But you should also prepare a list of questions to help you better familiarize yourself with the attorney and their experience.

You could ask questions, including:

  • Have you represented many people from my profession with similar injuries?
  • Are you able to represent me throughout all aspects of my case?
  • Do you specialize in any specific type of workers’ compensation claim?
  • How much of your practice is devoted only to workers’ compensation cases?
  • How long have you worked in this area of law?

You should be comfortable with the attorney, and feel confident that they can deliver a positive resolution to your claim. If you want someone on your side with extensive experience who knows Georgia’s workers’ compensation law inside and out, contact the Law Offices of Darwin Johnson.
