Is It a Concussion? Dealing with Workplace Head Injuries

By Darwin F. Johnson on May 25th, 2018 in work injuries, work injury, Workers Compensation, workplace injuries, workplace injury

You just hit your head hard. It’s the middle of the workday, though, so you’re reluctant to stop everything and rush to the ER. Surely you can shake it off, right?

Not always.

The premier workers’ comp lawyers in Atlanta’s Darwin F. Johnson law firm have worked with many clients who have suffered head injuries on the job. We know that an untreated concussion or another traumatic brain injury can have long-term effects on concentration, memory, mood and more.

Is It a Concussion?

If you or those around you notice any of the following signs of a concussion or other serious head injury, then you should call an ambulance right away:

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Amnesia of the time just before or after the injury
  • Major laceration or contusion
  • Mood changes, confusion or forgetfulness
  • A lingering headache
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light or noise
  • Ringing in the ears

These initial symptoms can progress to more dangerous ones like seizures, extreme dizziness, vision problems and internal bleeding. Your health is also at risk if you receive a second concussion soon after the first.

What if I Don’t Have These Symptoms?

If you don’t experience any of these worrying symptoms, then it’s still important to take care of yourself after an injury. Have a trusted friend or family member keep an eye on you for the first 24 hours. Then, take the next three or four days to rest your mind and body. If you notice anything strange during this time, do not hesitate to visit the ER.

How Do Medical Professionals Test for a Concussion?

EMTs and ER staff will determine if you have a concussion with several tests. They will ask questions, such as “What is your name?” to check your cognitive response. They will see if your pupils are responding correctly to light. They may also test your:

  • Strength
  • Balance
  • Coordination
  • Reflexes
  • Vision
  • Hearing

Based on what these professionals find, they may send you to a hospital for further testing and treatment. The sooner you receive this treatment, the higher your chances of a fast and full recovery.

Don’t Put off Treatment to Avoid Medical Bills

When you suffer a head injury at work, you shouldn’t have to worry about affording treatment. Your employer may be obligated to help you with your medical bills.
