If You’re Working Outside, Take a Few Extra Steps to Stay Safe in the Heat
If you’re working outside this summer, you may be putting yourself at risk for some serious health hazards. If you spend the majority of your working day outside, take the following precautions to keep yourself safe this summer.
- Stay hydrated. According to both doctors and Atlanta workers’ comp lawyers, one of the best ways to keep yourself from experiencing heat stroke or exhaustion this summer is to make sure that you’re drinking enough water. While the typical recommendation for daily water intake is eight eight-ounce glasses a day, workers who spend the majority of their time in the sun and heat can lose up to a third of that water through sweat. Bring a water bottle to work with you, and make sure to be regularly refilling to avoid putting yourself in harm’s way.
- Load up on SPF. Sunscreen is for more than a day at the beach! Regular sunburn is one of the top causes of skin cancer in the United States; you may be especially at risk if you have a mole in an exposed area, as sun exposure can transform these areas into cancer with greater ease. Before heading out to work, be sure to apply a thick layer of sunscreen with a value of at least 30 SPF, and remember to reapply every two to three hours, as you may sweat your initial layer off as the day progresses.
- Wear sunglasses. While many of us associate sun damage to our skin, our eyes are also at risk of developing cataracts or cancer if overexposed. Look for a pair that provides 100% UV protection, and slip them on before heading into the sun.
