3 Things to Do After You’ve Been Involved in a Car Accident

By Darwin F. Johnson on February 28th, 2018 in Atlanta Accident Law

At the Law Offices of Darwin F. Johnson, our team is ready to tackle auto accident cases as well as catastrophic work accidents in Atlanta. We’ve handled thousands of personal injury claims and can direct you on how to handle the aftermath of a car accident.

Auto accident victims can be shocked, upset, and even frightened. With emotions boiling, it can be difficult to pay attention to the matter at hand, causing mistakes and missed steps to occur. Here are a couple of things that you should remember and do in this type of situation.

1. Call the Police and Gather ALL Necessary Information

Once the police arrive, a number of things will take place. The officer will document all sides of the story, and describe the accident in detail in their police report. The report is important for both parties to keep the story straight as well as keep a legal record and present it to their insurance companies. The parties involved in the accident should gather information on each other including:

  • Driver’s name and contact information
  • Vehicle description
  • Insurance information
  • Information about responding officer
  • Accident location
  • Witness contact information

You should also take pictures of the scene and gather any witnesses that can attest to the event.

2. Contact Insurance company

Now that you have filed the police report and have gathered all information on adjacent part involved in the crash, it is essential to call your car insurance provider. You will provide them with all of the information gathered at the car accident scene and any other necessary information for them to conduct a thorough investigation. The investigation will uncover who was at fault for the accident and will begin the proceedings for insurance claims.

3. Keep Records of Bills

Over the course of a few days, weeks and even months keep track or documents of bills including those for vehicle repairs, medicals bills, and other monetary losses you’ve experienced such as loss of income from not being able to work. If you were not at fault for the accident and the other driver involved in the crash is found to have been negligent, you may have a case.

At the Law Offices of Darwin F. Johnson, we work hard to get victims of car accidents the justice that they deserve including any financial compensation. It will help your case to possess all of the information mentioned above. We require no upfront fees and only recover payment for our services if you win your case or reaches a settlement.
